How to Ensure Gut Instinct is the Right Instinct!

Our emotional lives are a patchwork made of beliefs we have internalised and modes of reality we have modeled

Ever get a “hunch” something is not right?

“Gut instinct” is real; it can even be measured, mapped in the body and analysed chemically.  We know that differing emotional states cause different sensations inside our body and different signal physical reactions… When we are angry, our heart rate speeds up and our face gets hot, when we are anxious, we feel a little sick and we breathe faster, when we are sad, our heart physically hurts.

What do you feel when you get a “hunch”?  Do you act on the feeling?  How do you know whether this intuitive decision is the right one? Have you made an intuitive decision that is the wrong one before?

Understanding how we are feeling on the inside is called Interoceptive Awareness and it truly is our internal guidance system – we can be guided by our heart.

Personal-growth-640x156

We also can be over-sensitive to our feelings, which we see in people who experience pain more than another person or experience fear more than the next person to the point of anxiety. While I was a previous sufferer of crippling anxiety disorder I have actually experienced a low Interoceptive Awareness since childhood.  It ultimately manifested in an eating disorder in my teens at a time when a lot of things were out of control in my life.  Interestingly enough [coincidentally?] I also have the “fat gene” that stops you recognizing when you’re full up.  Later this lack of internal guidance manifested in my experience of my anxiety, where my body would show very clear physical signs of anxiety (heart rate increasing, etc) without my conscious awareness until I was already in a panic attack. My eldest daughter also seems to suffer with this naturally low Interoceptive Awareness. For example, she will not seemingly notice feelings of hunger, pain or even needing the toilet, until the need is so urgent that it’s too late.

So you can see how this internal guidance system and our connection to it affects our positive:

  • Self-awareness
  • Problem-solving
  • Perspective taking
  • Social understanding
  • Flexibility of thought
  • Emotional Recognition and regulation
  • And use of our Intuition.

In this month’s 20:20:20 Programme we have been focused on Intuition – how we can better connect to it and how we can use it to make the intuitive decisions that take us forward to wherever we want to get to.

“Recent findings show that instincts based in feelings from within our bodies are powerful and useful influences on the way our minds make decisions. The old divide between a thinking brain and an unthinking body is blurring. And despite the word “gut,” that useful instinct goes far beyond our stomach and includes the feelings from our heartbeat, our lungs, muscles and even our immune system, whether we are conscious of it or not.  It is the “the dialogue between brain and body.”  Ottawa Citizen

So how do we listen to our gut and ensure it’s giving us the right answers?

Let’s think about the biological process.

We know we have five primary sense organs: our sight, our smell, our taste, our touch and our hearing.  Within these sense organs are receptors for specific types of stimuli that are connected to our body’s nervous system, which then sends data to our brain and provides us with useful information about our physical/external world. I.e. we feel an itch, we scratch, right? However, if we feel a threat, our nervous system will also respond appropriately; whether this reaction is appropriate or not (read more here to understand better what I mean and how this is damaging).

But what about our essential/internal world?  What about our connection to our inner voice, or even, our higher self?

This is where we meet our sixth and seventh sense.

Image result for how to use brain neuroplasticity to create new beliefs

We are still using our Interoceptive Awareness, but this is where we experience the “hunch” of intuition, déjà vu, or that crazy feeling of a past life parallel.  Conditioning makes us question these feelings, even distrust them. We spend 10+ years at school learning to look for cause and effect because there is always a theory or a precedent or a formula/rule. Where do you think we get the belief so strong that “it’s just a coincidence?”

When we begin to dip our toes into the world of vibrational energy and Law of Attraction, our senses become an interface between the dense physical world and the non-physical world of pure consciousness. Our sixth sense utilizes our feeling body to inform us when our intuition is on or off target, as long as that connection to our consciousness is strong, and if it is our seventh sense, our purest knowing will embody in us the impenetrable trust of Flow when we are in it.

When we are children, before we go to school and before we create beliefs or take on beliefs and conditioning that limits us and disconnects us from ourselves, we are in a state of open wonderment. And what I like to help my clients rediscover is that the same wonderment is still within us if we remove the upper limits that block us from it, and if we learn to become aware of the feelings we have, what they are telling us and can be sure they are not being shaped by beliefs that will not serve us.

So where do we start with that “gut feeling” that we can’t quite put into words?

ChildWe have to start with our belief systems that guide our ultimate self belief and how we show up in our life.  This is something I go very deeply into in my From Fear to Fierce course.

We can also use techniques that I am going to connect you to below that tune up our Interoceptive Awareness, so that it’s in good nick; not over or under-serving us.  If we think about the Maslow’s Hierachy of Needs, if we fulfil at the bottom we are more likely to reach our full potential.  Like the saying, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.”

We are all busy in life and serving the needs as others as well as ourselves.  Some of us are particularly driven and take on more than we can chew, but if we don’t notice our own needs stacking up, our proverbial cup tips over, so to speak.  And we can’t hear our inner voice if it is drowned out by other noise.  (If this resonates, you might benefit from my mini course to help quiet your mind, so your soul can speak.)

So, while our Interoceptive Awareness system is the least known and least understood sensory system and is generally thought to control our autonomic functions like blinking, breathing, and flinching.  It’s also how we recognise pain, hunger, thirst, needing the toilet, our emotions and more.  Sensory receptors send neural signals to the insula deep inside the brain and it is here that an important process is undertaken to decode the message and alert us to the changes in our body’s state.

Any imbalance in our body isn’t healthy.  If we think about emotion, being angry causes our heart rate to rise, the blood to rush to our face and then we often fire off at somebody and regret it.  Sadness causes our heart to physically hurt and this can cause us hide away and wallow, go off our food and disconnect.

We are empowered to act in a way that is positive at this decoding stage of the process.  We can choose to feel the emotion so that it is processed, not repressed. We can meet our needs and we can listen to the important messages of our inner voice and be guided by our intuition when it comes to the choices we make and the directions we go.

Different sensations inside the body allow us to understand how we’re feeling and make the best decision based on that fact.

Netflix for Health?

What is the deal with Netflix?  Why do people love it so much?

Answer? Because it is the simplest & most easily understood way to get a personalised service.

So what has that got to do with health?

The biggest problem when it comes to taking action in our health is our human nature.

We’ll do what we need to for a while to get healthy, but we’ll easily slip back to bad habits. This is a big symptom of us existing in sympathetic overdrive like I describe here.  Our habitual neuron pathways are deeply conditioned. Which means that when our sympathetic overdrive state activates our reptilian brain, whose job it is to find pleasure and avoid pain, we will easily fall back into bad habits because they are safe.

It’s all about feelings.  It’s uncomfortable to develop good lifestyle and nutritional habits.  It’s confusing and overwhelming to pick from all the different choices.  It’s frustrating when we make the wrong choice and we work hard at it to have no noticeable results.

Our hectic, busy, risk-averse, comfortable, contemporary lifestyles have caused us to operate and function mainly out of our reptilian brain and thus we have been trapped in constant reptilian brain generated reaction.  Conscious eating, conscious living, conscious efforts in terms of our health requires the activation of our neo-cortex.  And thus, we must learn to by-pass the reptilian brain completely in order to THRIVE instead of SURVIVE.

Instead, people are working on hope, guesses and off the shelf ‘generalised’ diets, work outs and health programs. The scary thing is that advertising, media and even political propaganda is supporting this by targeting the reptilian response section of our brains.  Every experience we have in our life creates a belief that dictates our future action.  It’s these previous experiences that really causes us to fail. Human nature is to avoid making the same mistakes again. So if we’ve had a bad experience dieting, or it didn’t work, it’s very hard to overcome the instinct to avoid change again, or throw in the towel early when it gets hard or seems like it’s not working.

And that’s often the case, as one size doesn’t fit all.  80% of diets failing certainly backs up that fact; if you like numbers.  The industry of Weight Loss has become a cycle where people are trapped in a loop of stop-start diets over the course of their lifetime and this is not supporting the fight against the chronic diseases that are ending our lives prematurely.

It’s time to take our power back.

There is no off the shelf – one size fits all approach to our health. And that’s why 80% of people end up on yo-yo diets and sleep-walking into chronic disease.  But the good news is OUR HUMAN BODY IS INCREDIBLE!

determinants of health USA.png

It has everything it needs within to keep us healthy, when we do what it needs and give it the right environment to thrive.

The thing is… every single person’s internal chemistry is as individual as a fingerprint.

So we have to start by understanding it.

I heard a great analogy from Jim Rohn once that put this into perspective for me…

Think of your body as a vehicle. Now, imagine for a moment that you had worked hard and had been able to save enough money to buy the car of your dreams. Maybe it is a fine luxury car that costs $75,000. You love every aspect of it. It gets you where you want to go, and it gets you there in style! Now, after driving for a few hours, you know you will run out of fuel, so you turn to the owner’s manual and find it tells you that you need to use unleaded fuel. Would you then go fill up the car with diesel? What would happen if you did? It wouldn’t run right. It wasn’t designed for diesel. In reading the owner’s manual, you would also see a recommended grade of fuel in order for the car to run at its most efficient level. There will be an octane suggestion; it might be 89. Now, the car could probably run on 87 octane, but not as well as on 89. So you would put in 89 octane. You must fuel the vehicle properly.

And yet we are not taking this approach with our bodies. We are designed to run on good fuel. There are other fuels we can put into our bodies, but they won’t run as efficiently if we do.

We hear, “eat right & exercise” all the time as the answer to great health, but what is right for you?

Our bodies are naturally a powerhouse of wellness. Starting at the deepest place within, with our body’s life forces; microscopic energy factories called Mitochondria. When they do not work as well as they should our body gets out of equilibrium and is unable to fight off diseases, give us the energy we need to thrive or stop us from ageing prematurely.

It is the seemingly simple things that we do not pay much attention to that are throwing our bodies off its natural balance – bad sleep, bad diet, lack of exercise and the toxins flooding our lives. And we chuck away the symptoms we feel as a consequence, like excess fatigue, digestive issues or mood swings as par for the course in a busy, hectic life (the same lifestyle activating our reptilian brain..). And yet they are the key symptoms in just about every chronic disease you can imagine that accumulate over years and winds us up with heart disease, diabetes, auto-immune disease and other chronic diseases that we could have avoided.

Cancer initiation and progression has been linked to the oxidative stress response elicited by mitochondrial dysfunction.

We are sleep-walking are way to chronic disease.

Imagine if you were to get sick right now and realise there was something, multiple things you could have done to avoid it.

We’ve all been there.  We feel a lump or we get chest pains or that cough turns into something more sinister than “nagging”.  Chronic disease and cancers do not just “turn up” overnight.  The risk factors for them developing are accumulating over years – disorders in how our body manages sugar, abnormalities on our Blood Pressure or Cardiovascular condition; sometimes arrhythmias or fibrillation that we would not necessarily notice. Sleep is also a huge risk factor and imbalances regarding our energy intake or utilization.

So how do we keep an eye on all these things?

How do we stay finely tuned like the expensive car we just talked about in the analogy?

Where do we find the instructions about what fuel our body needs and the special care that will prevent an unexpected break down?

How Gratitude is Linked to Your Bank Account (and other success!)

Do you ever find yourself saying something like,

“When I hit [fill the blank $/month], then I’ll feel fulfilled?”

Or, something like,

“When I lose that 5 kilos, then I’ll feel better about myself?”

Or,

“When I’m earning better, then I’ll feel grateful and blessed/happy?”

I’d like to suggest that you have it the wrong way around….

That is exactly where I was.  When I was in financial hardship I was miserable!  I was not grateful for anything I already had, just depressed, frustrated and in complete despair about everything I was lacking.  My energy was rock bottom and in that way it was completely blocking money or any success showing up in my life.  (Read more about the law of attraction in action here.)

We need to create an energy space in which the change we desire is compelled to show up.

So, if we desire more money to land in our bank account, we need to think first about how it would feel to have that money in our bank account! Feel the high of receiving it like we already have it. If we continue to pour out negativity, we will continue to attract more in… Because like attracts like.

I’m not sure I really believed in this stuff the day I decided to listen to my mentor when she suggested I should practice more gratitude.  But I was down for changing my personal energy.  It was sucking the life out of me.  So, even if you don’t believe in the law of attraction, wouldn’t it feel better to completely change your personal energy? Feel lighter, brighter, more positive and less anchored in the worries and the doubts?

Gratitude is the way to start. A feeling of appreciation or thanks. So simple, yet so powerful 💛💛💛

And did you know gratitude grows the more you use it? I am a walking example of that.  And the more gratitude you have, the more you open yourself up for abundance.  And that did totally happen to me.  Nothing changed in my business but me and it started with the practice of gratitude.

Every time my mind started on a negative thought pattern, I started to feel grateful, for whatever -. I even coined this, Gratitudeness 😊

According to the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, “the average person has about 70,000 thoughts each day. Most of these thoughts are very similar and simply repeat over and over in our heads each day.” There’s one big problem with this — the vast majority of these thoughts are negative.

It’s not always a matter of simply telling our minds DON’T THINK THIS NEGATIVE THOUGHT NOW. Because guess what our minds do? They start to think about that negative thought (they just ignore the don’t part). As the famed psychotherapist Carl Jung said “What you resist persists.”

Flexing our Gratitude muscle works to stop negative thoughts in their track and replace them with something positive and moreover, a good feeling, rather than the bad ones that come with thinking negative thoughts.  When we feel low thoughts, our whole energy depletes and it limits our potential, when we feel good thoughts our energy rises and we open ourselves up to opportunity.

So here is an action to try… Next time you feel sadness, loneliness, fear, anger, bitterness or any negative emotion, try and and flip it to Gratitudeness.

I honestly believe this has been a big part in my success the last 18 months because like attracts like. Feel good do good. We are literally magnets with our personal energy fields. And more often than not, we are pointing the magnet in the wrong direction 😲

If you want to know the exact practice I used to practice gratitude every day, reach out to me in the box below and I’ll send it to you, free of charge!  Please write GRATITUDE in the comments

What is your deepest darkest confession?  The thing that you don’t feel like you can tell anyone about, but the thing that is holding you back in your life?

At the beginning of January I committed to creating a video every day for 365 days to help others lift their vibration to manifest success.

You can see them at my YouTube Channel here.

I have had a lot of people reaching out to me since I began these videos.  It seems my suggestion that there is something deep down that holds us back is a true one for many, not just a reflection of my own experience.

When I finally began to work on myself, deeply last year, I discovered that my #1 value in life was freedom and everything in my life was the opposite – trapped and controlled because an experience I had 14 years ago had me living my life in a nice safe bubble.  I suffered with crippling anxiety and I learned that it was my brain, my mindset’s clever way to stop me straying out of that safe bubble.

I read a quote today that said, “you will face your greatest opposition when you are closest to your biggest miracle” – Shannon L. Alder

And it really spoke to me.  I coached with my own incredible mentor 11 months before I shared my deepest, darkest confession.  I peeled back every single other onion layer before that point and I made big transitions forward.  However, it took 11 months for me to speak out what was deep inside and really putting my life on hold.

Do you have something that sits heavy in your heart?  Your own deepest darkest confession?  Not in the sense that it is something you have done, but in that you don’t feel like you can tell anyone about, or maybe even verbalise it properly, you just know it is holding you back in your life?

How would your life be different if you faced this issue?  Spoke it out?  Discovered it and its impact on you?  Or moreover the impact the world is waiting for you to make exactly because this thing happened to you?

Time is so valuable.  I mentioned that last year I discovered my #1 value was freedom and that everything about my life was the opposite.  Coaching helped me discover myself in a supported, gentle and confidential way.  In this way I discovered my past experiences had created beliefs that were limiting me.  In stripping those beliefs away, and walking forward as a completely different person, taking actions I’d never believed were possible for me before I now have freedom in all areas of my life that are important to me – time freedom to spend with my children, a schedule that is mine, not somebody else’s, more financial freedom, more fun and enjoyment in my life, and perhaps more important than anything else, freedom to serve.

The final piece of my self-discovery has been the connection to my purpose and my ability to live that purpose, that freedom and feel the release of almost everything that was holding me back.  This has completely changed my vibration, my ability to manifest and thus my success.  My past experience, the thing that once broke me is now a gift and the reason I am writing a book, the reason I finally got my coaching business off the ground and the reason I connected with an opportunity that is changing peoples’ lives.

What if your story, your deepest darkest confession, the thing that perhaps brings you despair, is the thing that will bring people hope?

Reach out to me if you are ready for your own journey of self-discovery to begin

In your high vibes & happiness,
