How to do the Wim Hof Method

I learned so much recently attending a Wim Hof Method seminar.

Leading up to the event I was like a kid waiting for Christmas. I’ve long understood the power of breathing. One of my first major steps forward with anxiety was seeing a Breathing Physiotherapist and literally learning to breathe again. Who knew we could forget?

And yet yes, many of us do it wrong. Yeah, how crazy is that, considering it’s probably the most natural action we can do. But we breathe into our chests and over breathe. This is just one symptom of the “fear state” that our host suggested most of us live our life in.

Nigel Beach, of Element Health NZ, explained that our autonomic nervous system is made up of two parts – the parasympathetic and the sympathetic – and the world is in sympathetic overdrive.

He talked about part of the reason being the cost of the comfort that we all enjoy in our daily lives. This has made us fragile and lose resilience; mentally and physically. Obviously you’ll know if you follow me that I believe this fear state goes much deeper.  Back to the past experiences that shape our belief in ourselves and the beliefs we have about our world. It’s like looking at life through a lens framed by fear. But if we stop and choose to zoom out, we can see the same things through different perspectives.

For me a massive shift in perspective came really recently as I discovered my DNA. For so many years I’d been trying to fix what is wrong in my body by adding things in – probiotics, supplements, essential oils to treat symptoms – in my DNA results the answer was clear. The blueprint I need to get my body back to a natural state of balance that didn’t need all this extra shit to fix it.

For example, did you know when the body is under stress, our adrenal glands trigger the release of glucose stored in our various organs, which often leads to elevated levels of glucose in the bloodstream?  Working with non-invasive blood sugar monitoring technology for optimal wellness, I have been seeing a lot of people tracking high blood sugar levels and wondering where in their diet they need to change up what they are eating.  And granted, nutrition plays a huge part in blood sugar control, but at the same time I am seeing them working too hard and feeling stress and being “too busy”.  This too plays a huge part in our blood sugar control and is why I am so passionate about my Whole Life Wellness Packages.

We are all living in a state of sympathetic overdrive because of our high stress, high noise, high pace lifestyles and this has knock-on effects through our holistic health.  Those high blood sugar levels mean we don’t absorb all the nutrients from that lunch we just ate and so our body goes without the micronutrients it needs to thrive.

Nigel Beach, our seminar host said a sentence that was so powerful for me…

We are messing up our ability to to be human.

I couldn’t agree more!

So what do we do?  What did I learn on Sunday that has already been transformational for me?

Start with our breath.

Notice how you breathe.  Lie down on the floor, place a hand on your chest and in the dip of your diaphragm and feel whether you are breathing into your belly, pushing your ribcage out, or up into your chest.

Breathing is something we don’t generally think about; the job of our autonomic nervous system, but there are massive benefits of taking over control, in terms of our subconscious mind and physiology.  Because if we can control our breath, what isn’t possible?

Wim Hof certainly lives with this “everything is possible” attitude that is infectious.  We watched videos of him running a marathon barefoot and shirtless above the Arctic Circle, diving under the ice at the North Pole and sitting in an ice bath for the world record of 1 hour 53 minutes!!!!  2 minutes was a real push for me.

For the basics of the Wim Hof Method, visit his website, or attend one of Nigel’s seminars.  The Method is simple on the surface, but you want to make sure you are doing it correctly and safely.  You take 30 quick, deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your nose, but only exhaling 70% of the air you breathe in. Then, after the 30th breath exhale all the way out and then hold until you feel the need to breathe in again. At this point, inhale as deep as you can, and hold it for 10 seconds. Then take a 15 minute break and repeat for 3 rounds.

Nigel also taught us a really good breathing technique for anxious feelings, which creates nitric oxide and all its benefits on improved athletic performance, lowered blood pressure and better brain function (all things anxiety screws with.)

Combined with repeated exposure to the cold, mindfulness and consistency, Wim Hof says that his method can increase energy, lower stress and improve the immune system.  Nigel showed us how he had purposefully hacked his body’s PH using the technique!  And claims to have cured people of many afflictions.

For Wim it enables seemingly superhuman feats of endurance.  However, for me it is the perfect example of biohacking to experience our human bodies at their best.

So for me, what’s next?

I literally text my Muay Thai Coach following this seminar with this question!

I feel like this is just the beginning.  I have long believed in a profound connection between the mind and body and my experience in the ice only confirmed it.  When I got into the ice my breath was stolen from me and it took me by surprise! Like a fear of the fear, not being able to breathe like that triggered memories of the feeling of not being able to breathe in a panic attack and that made me start to panic. But then I did what I’ve learned. Breathe and step out (not the ice 😉, but my perception of the situation).  I breathed through.  Doing this enabled me to rationalise. I’m in ice. My body is cold. I need to breathe to make it easier on myself and suddenly space came for air to get through.  What would have been the result previously?  Giving in to the primal desire to run from the pain and fear of being in that ice.

And that’s what we are doing every single day of our lives.  In the comfort of our warm homes, shoes, medical bandaids and lifestyle crutches our autonomic nervous systems are giving into pain and fear and avoiding the actions that make our lives exciting and exhilarating.  And we are experiencing the chronic health issues of our bodies physically being in this chronic state.

Just like my Signature Course, From Fear to Fierce helps you to go into your past and effectively deal with your past experiences by taking control and making a choice whether you want the beliefs created from it to rule your life… going into the cold, facing it with conviction gave me the empowering choice to decide whether I stayed and took positive action (control my breath) or give up and run.  I cannot properly tell you what the feeling of going into that ice was like. It stole my breath and I felt like I was suffocating for the best part of that first minute and only then did I start to notice the pain in my hands and how my body was starting to violently shake.  And yet with help from my fighter comrade sat next to me and my coach I continued to focus on controlling my breath.  And even when I got out, the instinct was to run for a warm towel, but instead I used the power by body has to warm up! We danced, we jumped, we smiled!  We felt alive!!!!!!!

The feeling of the ice snatching my breath and that struggle to take control and how my body then went into an autonomous state of fight or flight can actually be likened to how life is setting the pace for the majority of us.

Whatever your situation, I bet life has you going faster than is good for you. Whether you are already feeling the discomfort of anxiety you can bet there’s symptoms of this pace:
– how many times a day do you say you are busy?
– how often do you feel tired or overwhelmed?
– where is your mood at? Are you low? Do you go from high to low like a fall off a sharp cliff?
– do you often finding yourself taking a deep sigh out of the blue?
– is your sleep out of whack, or do you think you’re sleeping well, but wake up feeling unrefreshed?

Breathing is an effective way to slow us down and counteract the damaging effects that prolonged stress can have on our bodies — effects that are well known, are generally accepted and you are likely suffering – even if you don’t know it yet.

Something like Wim’s breathing technique and how it changes our physiology is key to understanding how we step in at the earliest transition point from our body’s state of wellness to disease.  Where are we imbalanced?  How do we get that balance back?

As an example of how powerful this is, in 2014 Wim Hof got a group of test subjects together under the supervision of Dutch researcher Matthijs Kox and they were injected with E-Coli.  The test subjects had learned the Wim Hof breathing technique for 10 days previously and there was nothing special about these people; they were randomly picked.  They performed the techniques as they were injected with the substance that would normally have people suffering fever and nausea pretty quick and instead they experienced lower levels of inflammation, and were less affected compared to the unlucky control group who had not learned and weren’t practising the Wim Hof technique!  Wim’s got science intrigued…!

So, if we find out early that we are suffering with inflammation within our body through a simple blood test that measures CRP, and then we use the Wim Hof Method to eradicate it from our body, what does that say about our ability to avoid the chronic disease of which inflammation is a major warning sign?  Moreover, what in our life is causing that inflammation?  What does our unique body need us to change so balance is restored?

Check out this diagram…  It’s a pie chart of the determinants of health in the US.

So across a person’s lifetime, their wellness can only be attributed 10% to the healthcare they received.  The rest is us, our beautiful human body and all it superhuman powers and the ability we give our body to work at its maximum potential through our behaviour, nutrition and environment.

How Gratitude is Linked to Your Bank Account (and other success!)

Do you ever find yourself saying something like,

“When I hit [fill the blank $/month], then I’ll feel fulfilled?”

Or, something like,

“When I lose that 5 kilos, then I’ll feel better about myself?”

Or,

“When I’m earning better, then I’ll feel grateful and blessed/happy?”

I’d like to suggest that you have it the wrong way around….

That is exactly where I was.  When I was in financial hardship I was miserable!  I was not grateful for anything I already had, just depressed, frustrated and in complete despair about everything I was lacking.  My energy was rock bottom and in that way it was completely blocking money or any success showing up in my life.  (Read more about the law of attraction in action here.)

We need to create an energy space in which the change we desire is compelled to show up.

So, if we desire more money to land in our bank account, we need to think first about how it would feel to have that money in our bank account! Feel the high of receiving it like we already have it. If we continue to pour out negativity, we will continue to attract more in… Because like attracts like.

I’m not sure I really believed in this stuff the day I decided to listen to my mentor when she suggested I should practice more gratitude.  But I was down for changing my personal energy.  It was sucking the life out of me.  So, even if you don’t believe in the law of attraction, wouldn’t it feel better to completely change your personal energy? Feel lighter, brighter, more positive and less anchored in the worries and the doubts?

Gratitude is the way to start. A feeling of appreciation or thanks. So simple, yet so powerful 💛💛💛

And did you know gratitude grows the more you use it? I am a walking example of that.  And the more gratitude you have, the more you open yourself up for abundance.  And that did totally happen to me.  Nothing changed in my business but me and it started with the practice of gratitude.

Every time my mind started on a negative thought pattern, I started to feel grateful, for whatever -. I even coined this, Gratitudeness 😊

According to the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, “the average person has about 70,000 thoughts each day. Most of these thoughts are very similar and simply repeat over and over in our heads each day.” There’s one big problem with this — the vast majority of these thoughts are negative.

It’s not always a matter of simply telling our minds DON’T THINK THIS NEGATIVE THOUGHT NOW. Because guess what our minds do? They start to think about that negative thought (they just ignore the don’t part). As the famed psychotherapist Carl Jung said “What you resist persists.”

Flexing our Gratitude muscle works to stop negative thoughts in their track and replace them with something positive and moreover, a good feeling, rather than the bad ones that come with thinking negative thoughts.  When we feel low thoughts, our whole energy depletes and it limits our potential, when we feel good thoughts our energy rises and we open ourselves up to opportunity.

So here is an action to try… Next time you feel sadness, loneliness, fear, anger, bitterness or any negative emotion, try and and flip it to Gratitudeness.

I honestly believe this has been a big part in my success the last 18 months because like attracts like. Feel good do good. We are literally magnets with our personal energy fields. And more often than not, we are pointing the magnet in the wrong direction 😲

If you want to know the exact practice I used to practice gratitude every day, reach out to me in the box below and I’ll send it to you, free of charge!  Please write GRATITUDE in the comments

What is your deepest darkest confession?  The thing that you don’t feel like you can tell anyone about, but the thing that is holding you back in your life?

At the beginning of January I committed to creating a video every day for 365 days to help others lift their vibration to manifest success.

You can see them at my YouTube Channel here.

I have had a lot of people reaching out to me since I began these videos.  It seems my suggestion that there is something deep down that holds us back is a true one for many, not just a reflection of my own experience.

When I finally began to work on myself, deeply last year, I discovered that my #1 value in life was freedom and everything in my life was the opposite – trapped and controlled because an experience I had 14 years ago had me living my life in a nice safe bubble.  I suffered with crippling anxiety and I learned that it was my brain, my mindset’s clever way to stop me straying out of that safe bubble.

I read a quote today that said, “you will face your greatest opposition when you are closest to your biggest miracle” – Shannon L. Alder

And it really spoke to me.  I coached with my own incredible mentor 11 months before I shared my deepest, darkest confession.  I peeled back every single other onion layer before that point and I made big transitions forward.  However, it took 11 months for me to speak out what was deep inside and really putting my life on hold.

Do you have something that sits heavy in your heart?  Your own deepest darkest confession?  Not in the sense that it is something you have done, but in that you don’t feel like you can tell anyone about, or maybe even verbalise it properly, you just know it is holding you back in your life?

How would your life be different if you faced this issue?  Spoke it out?  Discovered it and its impact on you?  Or moreover the impact the world is waiting for you to make exactly because this thing happened to you?

Time is so valuable.  I mentioned that last year I discovered my #1 value was freedom and that everything about my life was the opposite.  Coaching helped me discover myself in a supported, gentle and confidential way.  In this way I discovered my past experiences had created beliefs that were limiting me.  In stripping those beliefs away, and walking forward as a completely different person, taking actions I’d never believed were possible for me before I now have freedom in all areas of my life that are important to me – time freedom to spend with my children, a schedule that is mine, not somebody else’s, more financial freedom, more fun and enjoyment in my life, and perhaps more important than anything else, freedom to serve.

The final piece of my self-discovery has been the connection to my purpose and my ability to live that purpose, that freedom and feel the release of almost everything that was holding me back.  This has completely changed my vibration, my ability to manifest and thus my success.  My past experience, the thing that once broke me is now a gift and the reason I am writing a book, the reason I finally got my coaching business off the ground and the reason I connected with an opportunity that is changing peoples’ lives.

What if your story, your deepest darkest confession, the thing that perhaps brings you despair, is the thing that will bring people hope?

Reach out to me if you are ready for your own journey of self-discovery to begin

In your high vibes & happiness,

A thought (and tip) on limited beliefs!

You are the average of the five people you spend most time with ~ Jim Rohn

This means our community can make or break our success!

We have 70,000 thoughts buzzing around our mind every day and unfortunately, most of them are negative.  So who we hang around, what we listen and what influences our thoughts becomes significant.

  • What is your mental nutrition?
  • Who is lifting you up?
  • Who is inspiring you?
  • Who is pushing you forwards?
  • Who is supporting you?

Because all of us have limiting beliefs and they don’t need any help holding us back!

In fact, if you aren’t experiencing success in a particular area of your life right now I can almost guarantee a limiting belief is at play.

Last year began the process of interrogating my past experiences to understand the ones that had created my limiting beliefs around money, parenting and success.  Because they were all presenting as a crippling lack of belief in myself and this was BEFORE the experience that completely shut me down in fear.

You see, most of our limiting beliefs are created when we are children.  When we are between 2 & 6 years old our brains are like little sponges; we absorb everything and create our beliefs from what we observe innocently in our world.

And the thing is, we cannot change the experiences that happened in the past, we can only ever control what we do going forwards.  We can continue to live trapped by our limiting beliefs and our fears or we can make a decision to grow.

On my Facebook Page I posted today that my Manifestation Challenge is running again to help you choose empowering thoughts over negative ones and help change your focus.

Just think of it like programming – like your brain is just a big computer and you can download the new stuff you want on it, but you have to invest in the programming.

Otherwise every thought, will ping a big emotional charge like fear, which keeps you stuck.

And you know, I was stuck, really stuck 18 months ago.  And then suddenly out of nowhere an opportunity presented itself to move forward.

It was a business opportunity actually.

I couldn’t afford it

I didn’t believe I had it in me to achieve in it

But I couldn’t handle the idea that if I didn’t take it I was going to stay stuck!  That was the only reason I said yes to it!  That and I was kind of inspired by the idea of changing the world…

But the big message is that decision is directly responsible for where I am today because of the community it connected me to and the motivation and inspiration I surrounded myself with that encouraged me to believe in myself.

I upped my average

So, limiting beliefs, your mental nutrition, your community and your new programming.  I really recommend, even if it isn’t my free manifestation challenge, find one new way this week to start reprogramming your thoughts this week.

You can check out my last newsletter too to see some ideas you can try straight away!

In your happiness & high vibes!

Are you ready for your life, your business and your bank account to ELEVATE?

Are you struggling to see where you are you going in your life/business, experiencing a lack of belief, or feeling like you are on the verge of giving up?

I was. And do you know what I found out? I was asking the universe for everything that was making me feel that way:

  • Financial worry
  • Stress
  • Hardship
  • Struggle
  •  Scarcity.

My mindset equaled my vibration which matched the low-level of success in my life.

Do you believe in Law of Attraction? Do you believe in the ability to manifest success in your life?

I do. Recognising how my mindset, how I carried myself and how all the worry and fear was negatively affecting my ability to manifest was my first powerful step toward changing my experiences.

So congratulations, you just took a step closer to elevate your life, you business and your bank account!

Now let’s work on the important stuff:

  • Those ‘low-level’ thoughts
  • Your vibrational energy
  • Your lack of self belief anchored in the fears born out of previous experiences that are blocking you from receiving what you desired.

Terrifying?

Yes. I get you. When I started to do this it was a big change in tack.  And a scary one because I actually had to pay for some support.  I was out of my depth.  I had been focusing on the external stuff, the comparably easy stuff now it came down to it – the business strategies (that failed), the magic formulas from x,y,z successful person (that failed), the social media tips from the free downloads (that failed), rather than work on my internal condition.

And ultimately this was the only thing that was important and it was this that changed my life.

I made a choice between continuing to live trapped by fear or becoming fierce about my belief in myself.

20181019_184920_0001

When I committed to the internal experience of fierce belief and did the work to feel differently, I finally saw my vision start to manifest.

I’d previously approached my journey to success as: “I need my business to succeed to earn the money I need to survive, so I can feel good about my life again”, rather than “How can I feel good about my life again to be an energetic match for the extraordinary life I want for myself?”

The emphasis must be placed on healing the internal condition, not strapping bandaids over everything else that is external to us, like our business or our relationship or our job.

We need to lock eyes with our past self. Just for a moment and recognize the times when we failed…  or when we saw our parents fail… or when we bowed under the pressure of success… or when what we wanted inadvertently took away our freedom… or those times we were judged, bullied, ridiculed…  Rejected.

It hurts to look back and I’m not asking you to dredge all that happened back up again. I feel your fear about that.  I feel your pain.  There was a time in my life when everything unravelled.  When I was broken to what I feared was beyond repair.  My loss of self-consumed me for what felt like forever.  And I went through it mostly alone because I didn’t think anyone could help me.

I didn’t realise until last year how much what I experienced had trapped me in fear.

For 14 years I built a world that was a nice, safe bubble.  I developed an anxiety that prevented me wandering outside of that safe bubble.  And I made decisions from that place, thought from that place and acted from that place.

It doesn’t matter what experience creates your fears that lead to your lack of belief in yourself.  It doesn’t matter the size or the type of the fear; it doesn’t matter.

What matters is how you can use those experiences as your greatest power to GO FORWARD.

As your motivation to become a fierce pitbull of your thoughts and grateful throughout every inch of yourself for everything you already have.

You are alive, you are a survivor and a fighter and you are powerful!  You can journey towards your vision of better by taking simple actions that will begin to change your mindset and start to re-wire your brain!

I’m conscious that right now I know what you are thinking.  I know where my mindset was and what I was prepared to invest in terms of my time and money into myself.  Part of me felt like it was a waste of money and a lot of me felt guilty for spending it when my family had so many needs above my own! I guess I was beginning before I was necessarily fully ready because there was an opportunity to do so and I was stretching myself only as much as I could stand outside of my comfortable bubble.

I get it.  The confirmation that working on your inner mindset is the best and only way forward for you right now will only come through through action that gets you RESULTS:

– Belief in yourself

– Freedom from doubting yourself and your desires

– Action over hesitation!

Your life, your business and your bank account will all elevate as you finally believe that you totally deserve all of the abundance that you desire. As you believe you are capable of having it and are ready to unapologetically go for it.

Now is your chance to get everything you have ever wanted. By working on the one thing you have probably ignored the most… YOU!

Make a choice to continue living trapped by fear or become fierce about your belief in you.

Get started here!

Much Love
