Why Most People Don’t Achieve Their Goals & The 2 Things That Will Guarantee Your Success

There are things that help us achieve success and things that hold us back.  My goal is to make sure you’re aware of the former and avoid the latter!

Back in my corporate life I always had the reputation of being tenacious.  My old boss used to refer to me as a dog with a bone – I would never give up, and this has served me.

Working for yourself can be a labour of love! You can come up against walls and it can be a lonely job trying to break through them.  Many people give up.  And sadly, some people don’t know how close they are to success when they do give up.  Like I mentioned in a previous blog; it took me merely months to breakthrough after years of not succeeding.  What if I had given up that day 12 months ago when it felt like enough was enough?

So, what are the 2 things that will guarantee your success?

First, let me say, you can apply these to any goal, whether it be your business, weight loss or personal development. This is tried and tested, so grab a pen!

The first one is so simple, it will make you crazy.  Once you swallow this magic nugget of advice, things will start happening for you…

Success Tip #1 Show up consistently and with applied effort

What do I mean?

If you are trying to lose weight, grab the trainers and head out for that walk every day.  If you have a business goal to get your brand out there, put your face in front of a Facebook live every day.  If you have the goal to develop personally, pick up that book every day and read 10 pages, or listen to that webinar; whatever actions you set to work towards your goal, show up and do them consistently and with applied effort.  EASY.

So, what stops us doing this already?

Well, that’s Success Tip #2…. Accountability.

Accountability to keep showing up consistently and with applied effort is actually hard to find.  If there is no one standing over you making sure you don’t hit the snooze button, it is really hard to get out of bed and go for that run before work.  If no one is standing next to the pantry shaking a finger at you and looking disappointed as you reach for that Krispy Kreme donut it is really easy to scoff it.  And the same in your business, some days that phone weighs at least ten kilos when you have to pick it up and start cold calling all over again and sometimes it is just easier to take the day off.  However, that day off will cost you.  In contrast, if you know you’re meeting your business coach tomorrow and they are going to ask you whether you have called that list of people you promised to, you are much more likely to call them!

You catching my drift?  Accountability is the fastest way to progress.

And it’s generally where we fall down.  Especially when we work in our own business; there is no one motivating us every day.  And therein lies the power of having a coach, someone enabling your success – to set goals each week together, talk through obstacles, create strategies, think outside the box and reframe things when the going gets tough (so the tough doesn’t get going!)

Take a look at how I can help you here!  And set that intention right now to show up more consistently in action towards your goal.

With you in your success!

_ + _ + _ = SUCCESS!

I wanted to zone straight in on the ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM.

Everybody wants it, it looks like some people get it easy, but generally success is not a clear formula. But there is a formula, and I am going to share it with you in this blog.

Who am I to talk about success?

Valid question and I hope you’ll stick around by following my blog to learn about why I feel so qualified in this subject!

Here are the 3 key pieces in my formula for success:

1. Having a written goal

We naturally manifest more of what we focus on. When you spend time identifying what your success looks like, so you can describe your goal with clarity, everything else will follow smoothly.  Without a goal, you will remain stuck

2. Taking Consistent Action

I’m sorry to say it, but having a clear goal without taking action is not going to make your success happen.  I guess it sounds obvious when I say it like that, but I have learned not to be surprised when I see someone who has set a goal, felt chuffed and then sat back waiting for it to happen (whilst wondering why it hasn’t.)  You have to work backwards from your goal to understand the actions you need to take and when you need to take them, so you have a plan.  You also need to think hard about the things that might get in your way of plan and make another plan for what you’ll do in the case that these things happen (it’s so much harder to think clearly in the moment of challenge and this can lead to inaction.)  Finally you always need to know in the back of your mind WHY you are working towards your goal.  Write that down too, so that on those days when action seems impossible, you can remember why you are doing this and get back in the game.

3. Tasting LACK of not having had the success you crave

And when I say taste, I actually mean have had eaten that meal whole, so that it sits in your throat and gives you acid reflux for an entire day.  You have got to really understand what it feels like not to have had success.  Did you ever give up chocolate for lent?  How good does that chocolate taste when you have finally gotten to eat it?  Would it have tasted that good if you had just eaten it yesterday?

Hell no!

If you are not experiencing the success you want to right now, I want you to look at where you are and what you are experiencing.  It might give you some clues as to why you aren’t working as hard as you could be to be where you want to be.  And of course look at the 3 piece formula and ask yourself, “what am I missing?”

GOAL + ACTION + A REAL, DEEP EXPERIENCE OF NOT HAVING SUCCESS

= THE ULTIMATE FORMULA FOR YOUR SUCCESS!!!!

But wait a minute, there is something else…  The formula only works if you have time carved out in your plan of action to work on you and your personal development, and you have someone or something to keep you accountable to your plan of action!

I know, I didn’t mention this above, and it’s massive, and it’s for that reason most people don’t want to hear it.  However, if I’ve learned one thing from my personal experience it’s that not working on one’s own personal growth is the ultimate formula not to succeed, or at the very least put a roof over what you are actually capable of, which may be way outside of what you see as your imminent success!

If you’d like to spend a bit more time working on you, or hear more snippets of wisdom about success, please head over to my Facebook page and I’ll enjoy seeing you there!
