I have had a lot of messages on Instagram across the last 2 weeks asking me to join ‘Follow Groups’
I wanted to share why I hate them, why I think they are a waste of your time and what you should do instead if you want to grow a following you can actually convert to sales!
Obviously I understand that reaching 10k followers is a massive Instagram milestone and opens up the benefits of Profit Tools like the Swipe Up function. It also gives you ‘Influence’, but this means very little if you have influence in front of an audience that isn’t targeted to the result you can create for them. Your audience won’t engage and they certainly won’t buy, which is the goal I’m guessing you are seeking from hitting 10k followers in the first place!
So if we strip back to the basics… Instagram is about building your brand, right?… So you can build a following of people who know, like and trust you, so that they see you as an authority and trust to buy from you when you post an offer.
Can you guarantee that these random people in Follow Groups are going to build you a following that is targeted? No.
Do you risk creating traffic that is misaligned? Yes.
Do you risk following a bunch of people that screws up your algorithm score and looks bad? Yes!! (I made this mistake and am still trying to unfollow everyone!)
And let’s be honest. Instagram can be a drain at the best of times in terms of your time, money in ads (if they flop) and your mental sanity!
Wouldn’t you prefer to grow your following with less risks?
With a stronger chance of growing a following that is targeted? Who are curious about what you have to offer? Who respond to you with warmth (and at all) when you reach out to them in the DM?

- Master your Newsfeed posts, stories and meaningful comments to drive traffic to your profile and increase follows
- Drive Influenced Traffic – engage with people who are your idea client/customer avatar – this is a BIGGIE!
- Utilise your IG direct messenger. It is here you can connect with people directly, find out if they have a problem you can solve and make a call to action directly!
